Short Story Group More Information
This group started in 2024 intially as a seven fortnight course on classic Russian Short Stories. American writer and teacher George Saunders had published a beautiful little book about seven of the Russian greats including the stories themselves and his commentary. It was called "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain". Stories were by Tolstoy, Gogol, Turgenev and Chekhov.
We highly recommend Saunders' book for anyone who enjoys literature.
When Peter and Maureen started the group they announced it in the newsletter and turned up at the library thinking they might be the only ones in attendance. To their surprise nine people joined that day. Everyone enjoyed the Russian greats and by the time we finished Saunders' book, we had 12 to 13 members. We have continued to this day looking at stories by Mansfield, Hemingway, Greene, Munro and many others. We have two short stories to read every fortnight.
